Knitting has had a big revival recently; for speedier results, why not have a go at machine knitting! This course, run by Beryl Jarvis, has proved very popular for several years. Beginners and experienced knitters are welcome, to learn how this craft can be used to make well-fitting garments and non-wearable items. Brother punchcard machines are available, or if you prefer you can bring your own machine. With Uppingham Yarns, one of the biggest outlets for coned yarns in the UK, nearby this is a good time to purchase your yarn and learn. Materials will be available (Approx £12) or you may bring your own. Why not join in the fun and have a full week of machine knitting hands on? Or if you prefer you can just book for individual days.
Monday If you have not used a machine before or would like to be reminded of the basics then you will be taught to set up both the single bed and the ribber attachment. We will look at tension, shaping, hems and standard ribs. More experienced knitters will be introduced to a variety of fancy shaping, hems and ribs.
Tuesday How to use holding position for shoulders and necks, reading and adapting patterns, using charting devices, making it fit. In the afternoon we will be knitting buttonholes neatly on both single and ribber beds.
Wednesday Get to grips with using a Garter Bar, knit-in beads, and perfect cables on both single bed and ribber bed. This will include travelling stitches and embossed work.
Thursday Every machine can produce a variety of lace fabrics. Today will be a Lace day covering as many variations of machine knitted lace as possible.
Friday will be devoted to making up and neat finishing including cut and sew. We will look at Mattress Stitch, grafting, dealing with dropped stitches etc. Perfecting these skills is essential to achieving a good finish to your knitting.
