5310422 Musical Theatre Week
Tutor: Tom Newall
Location: Uppingham School
Anyone with a passion for singing, dancing, acting or performing will love getting involved with Uppingham’s Summer School week based on the bright lights of Broadway and the finest songs from the West End stage. Open to all abilities, the week will involve learning some full company numbers as well as splitting into more specific groups for those with more experience, giving everyone the chance to perform to their ability and thereby have the most fun!
In this jam-packed week you will work with professionals towards putting on a show in Uppingham School’s professional theatre on the last day of the course. You will be working together with everyone on the course and in smaller groups in putting your pieces together and there will be opportunities for individual coaching on showsongs, acting and choreography. By the end of the week you will have formed your own mini-casts and dance troupes, made lots of friends, learnt lots of skills and techniques and hopefully had lots of fun!
Led by Musical Director Tom Newall, a team of professionals will help students work on their singing talents, choreography, acting skills and provide technical back up for the week and end of week performance.
A number of subsidised places are available on this course. Please see the Windmill House Trust page for details and qualifying criteria.
What do we do each day?
Each day will be spent taking part in a combination of singing, dancing and acting sessions. Whilst everyone will have the chance to work to their strengths and interests, there will be opportunity for all to participate in full company singing and dancing routines. We will be working on a number of different songs for the final show, so will spend the day on these; whether that is working on dance break routines for the dancing groups, multiple part harmonies for the singing groups or even a whole scene from a famous show! We will also encourage you to spend some time devising and polishing your own pieces for the final show. For those of you who are residential, we will have all sorts of evening activities to keep the fun running all day.
Who can attend?
One of the great things about Musical Theatre is that all talents and ages are needed to make the best possible show. Boys and girls aged between 8 and 16 and of all experience levels are welcome and everyone will have the chance to follow different routes through the week to cater for their own skills, strengths and age.
The highlight of the week will be the show on the final afternoon. Family and friends will be invited to come and see all the students have learned and watch the high energy performance in Uppingham Theatre.
